10 Raninagar Birangana honored after 48 years

The reception was organized by Raninagar upazila administration and held at the Raninagar Pilot Govt High School premises on Monday, amid the Victory Day celebrations.

On the morning of the 49th Victory day of Bangladesh, 10 war heroines, or Biranganas as they are called, were honored for their contribution to the Liberation War at a reception in Naogaon, after 48 years of anonymity.

The reception was organized by Raninagar upazila administration and held at the Raninagar Pilot Govt High School premises on Monday, amid the Victory Day celebrations.

The program was led by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Al Mamun, while Member of  Parliament (MP) Md Israfil Alam was present as the chief guest, along with his wife.

The Birangana present at the event are: Maya Rani Sutradhar, Rashmoni Sutradhar, Shondhya Rani Pal, Shondhya Rani, Kalidasi Pal, and Geeta Rani Pal. They have been living with the traumatic memories of 1971, finally overcoming years of destitution and social stigma.

However, of the ten, four received the honor posthumously. They are Bani Rani Pal, Khanta Rani Pal, Renu Bala and Sushma Sutradhar.

The Birangana were also presented with honorariums, smart National Identity Cards (NID), crests, and farm goats.

Earlier, on December 3, the women were recognized as freedom fighters, finally being enlisted in the gazette after struggling for 48 years.

Officials from the upazila administration, law enforcement, freedom fighters, and political representatives of the area also attended the program.
